WHAT’S INCLUDED

What you’ll practise in each section

Comprehensive preparation for all three EPSO reasoning tests and their core subtopics. The package covers every topic listed below, with clear explanations, worked examples and practice questions that build from the basics to more demanding combinations.

Verbal Reasoning

Read carefully. Draw sound conclusions.

Work through short passages and learn to choose the answer the text actually supports, even when several options sound convincing.

  • Reading comprehension: identify the main point, key details and how the ideas in a passage fit together.
  • Supported conclusions: decide what follows from the information given without relying on outside knowledge.
  • Inference: draw a justified conclusion even when it is not stated in exactly the same words.
  • Facts, assumptions and missing information: distinguish what the passage establishes from what merely sounds plausible.
  • Negatives and qualifiers: spot how words such as “all”, “some”, “only”, “unless” and “except” change the meaning.
  • Comparisons and logical relationships: follow causes, conditions, contrasts and the order of events.
  • Paraphrasing and misleading answers: recognise equivalent meaning and eliminate options that exaggerate or distort the text.
  • Accuracy under time pressure: find the relevant sentence, compare the options and avoid reading more into the passage than it says.

Numerical Reasoning

Make sense of the numbers.

Practise with charts, tables and mixed data sets. Learn which figures to use, which calculations to make and how to check your result.

  • Pie, bar and line charts: interpret proportions, categories and trends, including grouped and stacked bars.
  • Questions with two or three charts: combine information from two or three diagrams, checking their scales, labels and time periods.
  • Tables and mixed displays: read rows and columns and cross-reference figures between tables and charts.
  • Percentages: calculate shares, increases, decreases and percentage-point differences.
  • Ratios and proportions: work with fractions, decimals and part-to-whole comparisons.
  • Averages and totals: calculate simple and weighted averages, totals, differences and missing values.
  • Reverse calculations: find an original value before a percentage change and work through changes in several stages.
  • Units, currencies and rates: convert quantities and compare figures on the same basis, including per-person and per-unit values.
  • Comparisons and estimation: compare groups or years, spot trends and check whether an answer is realistic.

Abstract Reasoning

Spot the pattern. Test the rule.

Learn to break a visual pattern into manageable parts, follow each change and test the rule against every figure.

  • Shape sequences: recognise the rule and work out which figure comes next.
  • Movement, rotation and reflection: track changes in position, direction and orientation.
  • Counting and shape features: count elements, sides, corners, dots and lines to identify a pattern.
  • Colour, shading and size: follow changes in fill, appearance and relative size.
  • Nested and concentric shapes: examine inner and outer figures, layers and changes between them.
  • Alternation and repeating cycles: separate interleaved sequences and recognise recurring groups of figures.
  • Adding, removing and combining elements: follow symbols as they appear, disappear, overlap or change together.
  • Multiple rules: combine two or more changes without overlooking a detail.
  • Additional visual practice: complete grids with a missing figure and explore relationships between shapes and connecting lines.

Not included: EU Knowledge, Digital Skills or the Free-Text Essay on EU Matters (EUFTE). This package focuses on the three reasoning tests.

A CLEAR STUDY ROUTINE

Learn the method, then build your speed

  1. Start by understanding the question

Read the theory and worked examples. Identify what the question asks and which information you need to answer it.

  2. Practise one question type at a time

Begin with the basics, then move on to harder questions. Check each step rather than relying on a guess.

  3. Introduce a time limit

Once the method feels familiar, try timed practice and mock reasoning tests. Work on keeping your approach accurate under pressure.

  4. Learn from your mistakes

Was it a reading error, a calculation slip, a missed detail or a rushed decision? Identify the cause, then practise that question type again.

TRY THE APPROACH FOR YOURSELF

Numerical and Abstract Reasoning samples

Try a numerical question with a worked solution, then explore two visual-pattern examples.

Sample 1 · Numerical Reasoning

Tables, percentages and comparisons

Read the table, choose your answer and check the step-by-step solution.

Percentage of cases completed on time

DepartmentTotal casesCompleted on time
A1,20084%
B1,00090%
C1,50076%
D80088%

Question

How many more cases did Department C complete on time than Department A?

See the step-by-step solution

Correct answer: C — 132 cases.

  1. Find how many cases Department A completed on time. Convert 84% to 0.84, then multiply: 1,200 × 0.84 = 1,008 cases.
  2. Do the same for Department C. Convert 76% to 0.76, then multiply: 1,500 × 0.76 = 1,140 cases.
  3. Calculate the difference. Subtract Department A’s 1,008 cases from Department C’s 1,140 cases.

1,140 − 1,008 = 132 more cases

Watch out: a higher percentage does not always mean a higher number of cases. Apply each percentage to its own total before comparing the results.

Sample 2 · Abstract Reasoning

What comes next in the sequence?

Look at the shapes, dots and pointers before comparing the answer options.

A sample of changing visual patterns. Select the image to take a closer look.

Where to start: examine the shape, the number of dots and the direction of the pointer separately. Then check whether the rules work together throughout the sequence.

Sample 3 · Abstract Reasoning

Find the missing pattern

Compare the boxes and work out which relationship the missing box must follow.

A practice question on relationships between symbols. Select the image to take a closer look.

Where to start: count the symbols and their connections, note what changes and test your proposed rule against every box provided.
